A guide to purchasing your child's first band or orchestra instrument

Giving your child the opportunity to participate in musical experiences is a wonderful gift that many parent want to give. Recent research consistently shows that participation in musical activities helps develop reasoning skills that apply in many other academic pursuits, in addition to just being fun!

Unfortunately, obtaining the required instrument can all too often be a difficult and costly experience for the parent. We would like to share some of our experience to help you avoid some of the most common problems that can arise.

First and foremost, there is nothing more frustrating for a music student or teacher than a musical instrument that does not work properly. Sometimes an instrument that seems to be a "good deal" turns out to have functional problems and can end up needing costly repairs, or worse ~ causing the student to quit in frustration.

Purchasing Your First Instrument

Many parents suffer sticker-shock when they learn that new student-model band and orchestra instruments sell for $400 to $1500 today (depending on the particular instrument some may be even higher ~ Saxophones for instance). Remember, these are not toys! The large "name brand" band instrument manufactures all make good quality instruments that meet or exceed the Music Educators National Conference minimum requirements. Orchestra string instruments from Galesel, Knilling, Najoya Suzuki, Meisel, as well as other smaller companies may be acceptable instruments for a beginning string player. Please consult with your lesson instructor as they may have preference on specific brands which are best.

School music programs for most area schools begin at approximately the same time of year, usually at the start of the school year. At OPUS 111 Music Studio, we encourage you to make arrangements to speak to a degreed faculty member about your interest in a specific instrument during the summer prior to the first day of band. Lessons can be arranged for students to get a "head start" during the summer months.

Many schools offer a "rent to buy" option for students "trying out an instrument". This, financially, is an acceptable situation for the short term but may not be the best value in the long run. Please note that you may end up paying more with such a program and may be financially better off to purchase an instrument up front. Again, talk to your lesson teacher as they may know where to find the best instrument at the best price. Students will know if they want to pursue the instrument by the end of the initial (2 or 3 month) trial period.

Should you decide to purchase an instrument for sale by owner, please be sure to have your lesson teacher or other qualified person check it out BEFORE you buy it. Ideally, your lesson teacher can give you the best advice as they are the ones who will be working with the student and instrument. PLEASE consider their expertise your #1 best advice for all purchases.

OPUS 111 Music Studio has periodic OPEN HOUSE dates during the year. You may meet and mingle with faculty members and try instruments. OPUS 111 Music Studio is not a retail supplier of instruments although parents and students may make private appointments to consult about lessons, instruments, additional classes, etc.
